Spelt (Spelt Berries)

Spelt (spelt berries) are an ancient whole grain that we have in our vegan pantry, which we grind into flour and bake into several kinds of bread and rolls. See more about it below.

About Spelt Berries:

Spelt is another of the ancient grains mentioned in the Bible. It is recorded in Exodus 9:32 as one of the grains grown in Egypt. Isaiah wrote about spelt in his book (28:25), and spelt was one of the ingredients in Ezekiel’s bread (Ezekiel 4:9). A 2 oz. (56.7 grams) dry serving of spelt contains 216 calories, consisting of 1.67 grams of fat (15 calories), 42.25 grams of complex carbohydrate (169 calories), and 8.1 grams of protein (32 calories). We have found that flour made from these berries baked into more coarse bread and rolls. However, from what we have learned, bread and rolls baked with this flour seems to be less allergenic than the common wheat flour sold in markets. We could not find detailed nutritional information for whole grain spelt.

Some background information:

Over the years, people have been asking us, “What do vegans eat?” This is probably because they first think about a flesh product as the main meal. After that they then think about everything else as a side dish. So, we began publishing the huge variety of plant foods that are available for us to eat in this section of our web site. Additionally, we are always on the lookout for something new to add to our collection. This way we can experiment with to incorporate into our meals. We have also found that eating mostly unprocessed plant foods make us much more healthy. It’s a great way to live and our foods provide almost all of our vitamins.
