Lettuce, Red Leaf

Lettuce, red leaf is one of the varieties that we like to purchase at local farm stores where it is picked fresh the same day. We are also always on the look out for for colorful veggies to add to our meals. See more about it below.

More About Red Leaf Lettuce:

This variety of lettuce has a sweet and very delicately textured and flavored.  It is also a variety that adds “interest” to our mixed green salads. We like to combine this colored leaf lettuce together with some of the firmer and stronger tasting greens, such as romaine, chicory and escarole.  Select heads of leaf lettuce that are bright green and red and with “firm” leaves (leaves that don’t flop over when the head is held upright).  Also, with red leaf lettuce, be careful that the ends of the deep cplored leaves have not turned brown.  See the nutritional chart with green leaf lettuce, which should be similar except for the phytochemicals that produce the color.

Some background information:

Over the years, people have been asking us, “What do vegans eat?” This is probably because they first think about a flesh product as the main meal. After that they then think about everything else as a side dish. So, we began publishing the huge variety of plant foods that are available for us to eat in this section of our web site. Additionally, we are always on the lookout for something new to add to our collection. This way we can experiment with to incorporate into our meals. We have also found that eating mostly unprocessed plant foods make us much more healthy. It’s a great way to live and our foods provide almost all of our vitamins.
