Cardamom Seed

Cardamom Seed is a vegan pantry seasoning ingredient. We often use a whole seed to flavor coffee and coffee substitutes. This is done by cracking a seed slightly and placing it in the cup. I have a large cup that holds two cups of coffee or roasted grain instant beverage and one seed is plenty to flavor the whole cup full.

About Cardamom Seed

This is a photo of the whole pods.  It is also an expensive seasoning, second only to saffron, thus it is often adulterated.  This is why we believe that it is important to buy only pure Elettaria cardamomum.  We have found that because the flavor of pure cardamom is so strong that a little goes a long way, and in the end is less expensive than adulterated varieties.  Each seed pod contains three double rows of seeds (the bulge of the seeds can be seen on the pods in this photo).  We use whole or split cardamom seed pods in beverages and in some curry recipes.  For more information on cardamom and to see the nutritional chart, see our description of ground cardamom.

Some background information:

Over the years, people have been asking us, “What do vegans eat?” This is probably because they first think about a flesh product as the main meal, and then think about everything else as a side dish. So, we began publishing the huge variety of plant foods that are available for us to eat in this section of our web site. Additionally, we are always on the lookout for something new to add to our collection and experiment with to incorporate into our meals. We have also found that eating mostly unprocessed plant foods make us much more healthy.
